Along with Gio Ponti and Pier Luigi Nervi, Melchiorre Bega is one of Italy’s most important modernist architects. He also worked as interior and furniture designer and Editor-in-Chief of Domus magazine in 1941-1944.
Bega graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts) in Bologna. In postwar years he was actively engaged in architecture and urban planning. Among his most well-known projects are the Galfa Tower in Milan (1956-59), the SIP Tower in Genova (1969), the church of San Giovanni Battista in Casalecchio di Reno (1962-1967), the Congress Palace in Bologna (1975). He built private villas, residential houses, fashionable cafes and bars (one of these is the legendary Motta cafe in the Duomo square in Milan). Bega collaborated with Altamira furniture brand.
